So, it seems that the UK may finally be in line for a bit of hot weather (rejoice!) and while that’s excellent tidings indeed for sun worshippers, it’s perhaps less welcome news for anyone who lives to spend time with their south Manchester running coach, pounding the pavement week in, week out.

It does depend in large part on the distance you plan to run as to what weather conditions are the best, but generally speaking you don’t want to have a cloudless sky and lots of sun… chances are you’ll overheat very quickly indeed, even if you’re a seasoned runner!

Firstly, think about what time of day you’re strapping on your running shoes and heading out. It’s best to do it early in the morning or in the evening so you can avoid the hottest part of the day.

Don’t forget to put sun cream on no matter what time you do hit the road, so you can avoid burning yourself and long-term damage to your skin. Also think about what you’re wearing – you should try to strike a balance between wearing as little as possible but covering up enough to prevent sunburn.

And, of course, hydration is super important at this time of year, although should never be neglected where exercise is concerned. You need water, yes, but electrolytes as well. These are lost when you’re sweating a lot so take some hydration tabs with you or dissolve them in your water bottle before going on your run.

If you’re a regular runner, you’ll already know that your feet can take a real beating, but they can come off even worse during the summer months so make sure your socks fit properly and don’t have any holes in them.

We’d love to hear your running tips and advice for hot weather, so give us a shout and get in touch!
