As lovely as the winter has been, some folks have found it a bit cold for outdoor running – so no doubt you’ve all been putting yourselves through your paces on the treadmill instead. The good news is that the icy cold weather has receded somewhat now, so you can start to pound the pavement once again.

If you’ve never run on sand before, now might be a good time to start, especially if you’re looking for a new challenge. Beach running can be harder than pavement running and you actually expend more energy doing it because it’s harder to get through the sand and because your muscles and tendons are more inefficient due to sand’s unpredictable nature.

Here are some of the best coastal running spots in the UK if you’re keen to get started straight away.

Baggy Point, Devon

Just past Croyde you’ll find Baggy Point in Devon, with some incredible views of the North Devon coastline. Run along the beach (but keep an eye out for incoming surfers) or head up to the headland for something a little different.

Ogmore-on-Sea, Vale of Glamorgan

This South Wales location is a Mecca for running enthusiasts and it’s the perfect fitness test thanks to the sand hill at Merthyr Mawr, which will definitely leave you gasping when you get to the top.

Brighton, East Sussex

There’s a very easy coastal 5K to do in Brighton and the best news is that it’s completely flat! And you’ll get some beautiful views of the city’s famous pier into the bargain, which is certainly not to be sneezed at.

And Here’s a bonus extra one if you want a nice long run

Bournemouth to Boscombe, Dorset

If you’re looking for something a little longer than a 5K, this 11km of sandy coastline from Bournemouth to Boscombe could be just the ticket. You’ll come back here time and time again, of that we’re convinced.
