There are all sorts of reasons why you might not be getting personal bests on your runs, whether it’s what you’ve eaten the night before, how well you’ve slept, the weather conditions… running can be a lot more complicated than just putting one foot in front of the other, it would seem.
But it may well be your feet that are causing problems or, more specifically, your shoes. The way you tie your trainers up could be having an impact on your running technique so if you can’t pinpoint the problem, perhaps take a look at your shoes and see if changing the way they’re laced helps on your next run.
If you look at your trainers, you’ll see that there are two eyelet holes at the very top of the shoe and it’s probable that you haven’t laced your shoes all the way up to these holes. Doing so can help prevent heel slippage, which can prove very distracting when you’re running.
This is easily preventable, however, and all you need to do is lace your shoes up properly to keep the best fit while you run. This will also help to prevent blisters, so it’s a win-win!
To lace up your shoes, start with the crisscross method, working from the bottom up but stop before you reach the final eyelet.
Use the left lace and create a loop in the left eyelet, then do the same on the right. Then crisscross the laces and pull them tightly through the loops, then tie a knot to keep the laces in place. Check out this video if you need a bit of help.
